Writing is like magic for your mind- it lets you process the present and reflect on the future at the same time. It has this uncanny ability to help you sort through thoughts and regulate emotions. Personally, I love to write first thing in the morning. It’s my daily ritual. Freewriting in a stream-of-consciousness, artist-style approach isn't just good for creativity in art- it sparks creativity in how you think about your life, too. It’s like a workout for your brain.
Writing doesn’t need to be a big production. There’s no pressure for word count, publication, or even relevance. Words are perfectly happy on any surface- whether it’s a beautiful leather-bound journal, your child’s coloring book, or even the back of a napkin.
Words are not picky. They don’t judge or punish- they just sit there.
They can be a thought, an idea, or sometimes, just a random word floating on the page. When we write, we’re processing, sorting, and connecting the dots. It’s a way to stay true to ourselves and stay on track.
You don’t even have to reread what you’ve written (unless you’re into that)- the patterns start to show up on their own as you keep going. It’s like watching a pile of words spontaneously rearrange itself into circles, squares, and eventually a puzzle that makes sense. As you do this, your mind clears, anxiety fades, and life feels a little less frazzled. Writing is free, doesn’t take much time, and is one of those small habits that can make a big difference. I challenge you just to commit to a few quiet moments in the morning: a warm drink, a cozy blanket, and a blank page. It might feel a little awkward at first, but soon, your inner wisdom will start to creep into the seams of your life. You’ll navigate your days with more clarity and purpose.
The best part? You’ll truly get to know yourself. The journal is your secret weapon, your best friend. It’s not for anyone else. Write about your wildest dreams, the people you admire (and maybe envy a little), what makes you angry, and what you hope for. You’re building a personal dialogue that’s just for you.
As Julia Cameron, author of The Artist’s Way, puts it:
“Pages clarify our yearnings. They keep an eye on our goals. They may provoke us, coax us, comfort us, even cajole us, as well as prioritize and synchronize the day at hand. If we are drifting, the pages will point that out. They will point the way to the True North. Each morning, as we face the page, we meet ourselves. The pages give us a place to vent and a place to dream. They are intended for no eyes but our own.”
So, what’s stopping you from picking up that pen tomorrow morning and meeting yourself on the page?
With love,
xo

last thing i do is write. it’s the most wonderful experience to be sleepy and tired and already have lived the entire day to have this space to myself. and if i end up writing creatively for a novel, it’s even better cause usually that already programs my mind to let myself dream away, which is always a big help in finding sleep.
i love the approach to write mornings and i have attempted it a couple of times and will in the future. for myself though, evenings/late nights always have been the time to write for me.
and you’re completely right. this space and the allowance we give ourselves, the permission to simply be on the page - it’s beautiful.
